Ghusl Washing

1. Ghusl (Washing)

  • Performed by same-gender Muslims
  • Body washed three times with clean water
  • Use of soap or fragrant substances
  • Private parts covered during washing
  • Performed with dignity and respect
Kafan Shroud

2. Kafan (Shrouding)

  • White cotton or linen cloth
  • Men: 3 pieces of cloth
  • Women: 5 pieces of cloth
  • No jewelry or ornaments
  • Simple and modest covering
Burial Process

3. Burial (Dafn)

  • Burial within 24 hours if possible
  • Body faces Qibla (Mecca)
  • Direct earth burial preferred
  • Simple grave marker allowed
  • Community participation encouraged

Salat al-Janazah (Funeral Prayer)

Prayer Requirements
  • Performed standing (no bowing or prostration)
  • Four Takbirs (Allahu Akbar)
  • Recitation of Al-Fatiha
  • Prayers for the deceased
  • Community obligation (Fard Kifayah)
Who Can Lead
  • Imam or knowledgeable Muslim
  • Family member if qualified
  • Community elder
  • Any adult Muslim male
  • Performed in congregation

Burying a Muslim

Burial Requirements
  • The grave should be deep enough to protect the body
  • The body should be placed on its right side
  • The face should be turned towards the Qibla
  • Planks/stones should be placed to prevent direct contact with soil
  • The grave should be raised slightly above ground level
Important Guidelines
  • No casket is required (unless mandated by law)
  • Simple grave markers are permitted
  • Building structures over graves is discouraged
  • Recitation of Quran at graveside is recommended
  • Visitors should maintain respectful behavior
